Xuqin Hu (she)

My name is Xuqin Hu, I am a fashion designer. I am interested in the silhouette of garments. My project is related to the culture of my hometown, my research is about a paper cutting culture in my hometown. During Chinese New Year we would glue paper cuttings onto the Spring Festival couplets, expressing a good wish. But with urbanisation and the death of the older generation, this culture is gradually disappearing. In my project I specialised in 3D experiments using different textures of paper and exploring the silhouette of garments, which was the most important part of my project. I developed six garments, which included both menswear and womenswear.

Memories of Hometown
The inspiration for my project came from a traditional culture of paper-cutting in my home village. This paper cutting is not found all over China, but only in my village. In my hometown, people would cut these paper cuttings during the Chinese New Year and glue them onto the Spring Festival couplets, which symbolise good wishes. However, with the urbanisation of the village and the death of the older generation, few people make these paper cuttings nowadays.
When glued to the wall, this paper cutout takes on different shapes. Apart from the natural drooping state, the paper cutout is also affected by the wind and forms different shapes. So I wanted to research this papercut and find some interesting silhouettes. In my project I specialised in 3D experiments using different textures of paper and exploring the silhouette of garments, which was the most important part of my project. I developed six garments, which included both menswear and womenswear.
