Although the doomsday is only humans’ imagination and didn’t actually happen, but all disasters are reference to reality. The fusion of fear with the humans’ imagination has produced a wealth of apocalyptic fiction. When resources are extremely scarce and human beings have to live in an extremely dangerous environment, the role and existence forms of library, as a symbol of human civilization, may change greatly under such a circumstance. In addition to being a place for modern people to read and communicate, it is more likely to exist as a place for states to collect and organize information, and more likely as a place to preserve the tinder of human civilization.
Starting from the background of doomsday in movies, novels and games, I summarize humans’ coping methods to different disasters, observe how humans live in these stories collect and utilize knowledge to continue the development of their civilization. At the same time, the priority of information in the current environment is explored to allocate interior space by referring to the case of human information preservation in the built disaster-resistant buildings and the research on the work of real librarians. Through the doomsday and library research, I will explore the possible existence of future library space.
The expected outcome is to design the space of a library which can cope with most disasters, and to collect and update knowledge to continue human civilization.
