Endo in the Office

Endometriosis awareness is low in Japan, and the current system for help is not working. Japanese culture and peer pressure are cited as reasons why endometriosis care is not considered necessary. These will limit the range of options available to students with endometriosis when they are looking for work or considering a career. It is therefore important for companies that are heavily involved in this matter to take pioneering action.

My project will design a workplace kit-of-parts to improve the Quality-of-Life of graduate employees in Japan, focusing on women with endometriosis. Companies will provide medical offices and nurses, rename menstrual leave, support employees taking it, and promote it to job-seekers. This will extend kit-of-parts beyond the workplace and into society.

Endometriosis and Mental Health

The relationship between endometriosis and mental health has attracted attention in recent years, as recurrent menstrual pain is thought to exacerbate pain sensitivity, creating a negative spiral of pain, anxiety and depression.

Ideal Cycle

To step into the challenge, we must figure out how to intervene in the cycle as the following. 1. For the first step, Companies raise new values about endometriosis with job hunters by adopting policies. 2. Then the students will begin to consider endometriosis and the awareness will increase in society as these job hunters and students enter society. 3. Thirdly, the other companies, influenced by this, realise that they cannot attract outstanding students if they do not have some kind of approach to gynaecological health, and they start to follow the trend.

New Demand

In the current situation, the overlap between job-seekers and companies is defined as ‘Career opportunities’. However, by making endometriosis’ existence visible, the scope of ‘Career opportunities’ will become an old normal and new demand will be formed.

Eco System Map

The project will not be limited to within companies but potentially have a ripple effect on broader society. Job-seekers, information websites, and other companies are stakeholders in the Level 1 layer. Next, their communities, families and friends are on the Level 2 layer. The Level 3 layer then influences the public opinion and media that encompass them and also surrounds potential students who are not directly related to employment or companies. Ultimately, they are expected to influence society.

Current User Journey Map

The user in this figure is a job seeker who potentially has endometriosis. She suffers from severe pain every time her period comes. However, she does not have the option of going to a hospital and just takes painkillers. Then one day, without realising it, the endometriosis had progressed and the cyst ruptured. That is when she first went to hospital and was diagnosed with endometriosis. Since then, she has had to deal with endometriosis while looking for a job, making her more anxious about her future and career.

Police Scotland – Case Updater

In response to our brief exploring the role of a modern Scottish police service, our group investigated the process a victim undertakes after reporting a crime. We created a Police Scotland case updater; an online service to be provided by Police Scotland to support victims. Here they would be able to find updates on their existing cases, guides and examples from previous cases, and support resources. They could also use this platform to get in touch with their investigating officer, ask questions, or provide feedback. Our aim being to improve the experience, knowledge, and autonomy of a victim in a vulnerable situation, the budget and efficiency of Police Scotland, and the trust, confidence, and relationship between the two.
