Hong Yiu Yoyo Chang (she/her)
Designer, maker, and innovator of dynamic spatial narratives. Passionate by relationships, ancient and new, natural and industrial, temporary and permanent, the connection between built form and its influence on our life as users. I am exploring the possibilities of space. Believe design can enhance the quality of life and gather people closer. My research is keen on the relationship between space and humans, in relation to human behaviour and interaction. As how the environments and society affect and reshape our living communities, in order to explore flexible ways to promote a better living space. Most of my projects are specialised in sustainability, durability and flexibility.

People have been restricted by the pandemic lockdown. Our private zone becomes a place that emerges multi-functions, like living, working and entertaining. Now gradually lifted the rules. However, habits have been formed and intensely influenced our life and behaviour. It conducts a new living style and constructs a new perception of interiority. The project investigated the aspects of human behaviour that changed during the pandemic, driving the idea of flexible and functional interior design in a new era.
Suggesting our living, behaviours and needs have gradually followed the forms of space. Exploring and motivating the idea of design for universality and function diversity. It frames a new concept of future interior design, which expands opportunities for interiors’ transferability, durability, and sustainability.

what is the impact? why could it be meaningful?
In comparison to conventional living and flexible living, we can see the design has successfully solved the problem of space flexibility. This allows people to reimagine the possibility of their living space. The sense of space and the versatile setting adds motivation to live. In addition to taking into account the issue of space, people’s lifestyle and quality are also factors to be considered in spatial design. Diversity and flexibility magnify people’s expectations of life. Considering that we have remained in the same space during covid, we should bring some passion to make our living environment shape as a completely different place. Keeping them opens up endless possibilities for them to explore.

By identifying how it could be successful, as we know, metabolism is a strong and innovative idea launched in the past. It seems successful and bravely build to introduce to the world. However, as time passed, it gradually shows that might not work well in architectural aspects. For my research and exploration of flexibility and metabolism, I realised its problem might be related to the scale of the scheme. The larger scale they have, the harder to manage with its uncertainty connected to maintenance and high cost. Therefore, I have proposed the idea by narrowing down the scale, considering drawing the concept into spatial design, then when time is matured sufficiently, it could be expanded. Besides that, the scheme also benefits the perspective of sustainable development. I believe it would make difference and impact the next generation and the interior architecture industry.
Throughout the research, flexibility is a significant value growth benefit to our living environment. Deeming flexible is not only used on functions and zoning but the internal impact on human life. It will be a positive effect, which make people consider more about the quality of living. Flexibility is always considered a strategy to tackle the semi-living space. Indeed, it is, however, it could also use to provide diverse possibilities to normal space. By rethinking the purpose of living, and how the interior shapes our lives, we develop our own flexibility in our space, and then achieve our individuality through our living environment.
HOST?
We live within this massive environment. People manage to believe what happens is controllable themselves. We always thought ‘we’ should be our own host. However, we are often bounded by some things. In this case, are “we” still our own host? The things are opaque, as well as the HOST. For the project, I have identified and visualised the HOST.
People have the self-consciousness to manage and control what they want and do. On the other hand, if the condition has been switched, how people would react to it? The uncertainty and varying add restrictions to their behaviours in the space. It is well- expressed the relationship between the host and guests. These are a question that makes people rethink. Where are we at? Who will be our host?
It will be a fascinating exploration.
SO WHAT/ WHO IS THE HOST?
_______________________________________________________
People often do a lot of damage to the planet arbitrarily. These actions are all in self-interest. For example, the most common causes of global warming are the air pollution emitted from transportation. In this case, it seems that human beings are the host, and the earth should serve to our live advantage. However, that’s not the case. When people come to the site, the relationship between the host and guests will be swapped. Our behaviour changes due to the activity of water. When the water level ascends, people had to change their original approach to movement.
It will be the true relationship between HOST and GUESTS.
The keywords about the movement of the site refine in the beginning are
FLOOD > CHANGE > EMPTY > HIDDEN > DISAPPEAR > DECAY > …
Now I have defined ‘ADAPT’ to the end. It sums up the idea of adaptation. We have to accept the worse situation, and then find solutions to deal with it. I believe this process with being circular, then it will sustain till the end.
