‘Above all, art should be fun’ – This is one of the most impressive things that Alexander Calder said when I was researching him – ‘When everything goes right, a mobile is a piece of poetry that dances with the joy of life and surprise!’
During my time as a fashion student, my classmates used to joke “Are fashion school students going to jail for not wearing all black?”Wearing an all-black outfit seems to be the dress code of the fashion school, which is like a voice from your heart: “real life is totally desperate and boring and I don’t want to spend my time trying to change it.”Therefore wearing all black allows us to look like we can disregard the chaos of our surroundings and allows us to disappear into the crowd. In fact, we occasionally try to become positive about life, but we end up wearing that black t-shirt we are used to wearing in our wardrobe as it makes us feel safe.
When I was once talking to a friend of mine who had been struggling with depression for eight years and had been confirmed as not being able to return to her previous state of health, she told me that she was now able to live a barely normal life, at least feel that she had gained some happy moments when talking to friends. It may be true that the nature of life is black, disgusting and dull, but we can still explore something in it that cheers us up. Alexander Calder’s mobile sculptures were a great inspiration to me when I was making this project, the combination of those lovely wires and shapes seems like they are full of magic, which is why I added them to the black garments.I think the most important thing for me is to make fashion promote emotional well-being.
If people can have a fun and interesting experience in my collection even for a few seconds, that’s what I want to do.
half scale experiments
My studio project is based on Alexander Calder’s mobile sculptures. The combination of those lovely wires and shapes seems like they are full of magic.
I’ve researched a large number of mobile sculptures including the materials and the principle of movement. Then I experimented with combining the mobile sculptures within fashion. Experimenting with building the mobile sculptures from lots of artworks and have tried many different materials to create conceptual 3D garments.
After Alexander Calder there have been many artists who devote themselves to making mobile sculptures, which is a kind of self-supporting sculpture that derived their motion from touch or air currents.
Meanwhile, the finished sculptures are composed of mild steel wires and washable paper. My collection of womenswear combines constructed sculptural silhouettes with a muted colour palette, combines the self-supporting sculpture with conceptual garments.
