Soften
Combining welding, ripping, weaving and embroidery, this work explores the often unseen “niceness” tactics used by women to navigate intimidating situations. This could include ‘laughing politely’ or ‘softening what you want to say’ when in an uncomfortable situation. This is because of the feeling that acting otherwise risks provoking a violent response from the other person. I wanted my work to address there is this survival instinct, an ability to adjust and respond when threatened.
I create the work in a way that reacts to the space and my own intuition, exploring the contrast of fluidity and rigidity in my materials. The voices and testimonies from conversations with other women were then incorporating into the piece, through the hand stitched text on the clothes’ labels.
