Project Statement

Project Title: Transformation

The project explored the relationship of garments between 3D and 2D.
As a fashion designer, I studied pattern cutting during my BA course in London
College of Fashion, after the internship in the fashion industry, I decided to apply the
MA in Glasgow School of Arts to learn different explanations about fashion design.

In this project, I began the primary research with a black suit, began to work on the
translation of 3D to 2D of the garment. The project used experimental methods, such
as, pencil, watercolor and acrylic to reproduce 3D garments on flat paper. I also
refined the experimental approach based on Yves Klein’s artwork ‘Anthropometries’
and the artworks by Simon Ungless. During the design development phase, I chose to
place the details of the design inside the silhouette. For instance, I tried to make the
patterns keep flat when the armholes move to the front.

The final collection that I designed considered the range plan and the unified of the
silhouettes, I redo the patterns of the suit and trousers, let them have a circle outline
instead of the traditional shapes. Then a visual sense of ‘flattened 3D’ was achieved.
